Reliance 3G Tab : A complete review. Rooting the Reliance 3G TAB.

Is the new Reliance 3G Tablet worth your money or should you buy something else, read this review to find out.

Recently, Reliance decided to up the ante of 3G gadgets offerings by telecom companies in India, by releasing the Reliance 3G Tab. However it is a matter of debate whether the tablet is suitable enough for all strata of users. This is what an Mr. Mahesh Prasad, President, Reliance Communications Ltd had to say.

“The launch of Reliance 3G Tab is in line with this principle. We believe the unmet demand of a fully loaded tablet at an aggressive price point will now fuel the aspirations of the evolved customers.”

“Equipped with the best 3G network in India, customers can now enjoy superior 3G broadband speeds for Internet access and uninterrupted data experience without buffering on their Reliance 3G Tab along with a host of other features.”

If you read between the lines, the release says, it is meant for customers who are a first time tablet buyer or upgrading from an even lower powered tablet.

What you can do with the Reliance 3G Tab?

This is what Reliance 3G Tablet can do

Video, Music, Social Networking

You can watch Youtube videos on it, using the Youtube app from the Android market. You can chat and connect with your friend on Twitter, Facebook. You can check your email on websites or through the email client. You can do voice chat using skype or any other voice messengers for Android. You can surf the internet and visit websites.

Office stuff.

You can read MS Office documents on it, if you have the paid version of office suites like QuickOffice for Android you can edit or create documents on it. You can play Angry Birds and other games on it. You can download thousands of apps from the Android market.

Ebooks , news and pdf

You can download the  Kindle app from Amazon, buy and read ebooks on it. You can also view PDF documents or read various other ebook formats on it. This can also work as a good ebook reader. You can watch TV on it using the Mobile TV app.

If you are a first time buyer of tablet computing devices and want casual usage, this tablet is a good buy.

For power users ?

But, if you are a power user and like to watch Flash videos  such as movies, serials from sites like Megavideo, Dailymotion, Videobb etc, this tablet will not work. Any Android version running on CPU’s with speed less than 1 GHZ or below Cortex A8 CPUs can not run the flash player.

If you want to watch Flash videos and play high end games you have to buy a tablet with a CPU of speed of at least 1 Ghz or more (Cortex A8 or better).

Tech stuff

The Reliance 3G Tab is manufactured by ZTE a big Chinese company, which manufactures tablets, phones, USB 3G dongles, WiFi dongles etc for other companies like Samsung etc. The Reliance 3G tab is based on the ZTE V9 tablet form factor.

The ZTE V9 is an old tablet that debuted in Q1, 2011. It was a 800 Mhz tablet running on Android 2.1 with a resistive single touch screen. The ZTE V9 has been modified and upgraded to a capacitive touchscreen  and runs on Android 2.3. But, the processor speed remains the same.

reliance_3G_tab_zte_v9_comparison

Both the ZTe V9 and the Reliance 3G tab looks the same. In case, you are wondering why the Reliance tablet looks like Samsung Tab, this is because ZTE Corp also manufactures the Samsung Tab.

ZTE has also released a phone based on the same cpu, memory and Android 2.3 OS, it is called the ZTE Skate, and has a 4.3 inches screen.

CPU and similar devices using same CPU

The CPU model is still unknown, but speculations are that it is based on a Qualcomm MSM7227-T  (Turbo) processor. It is based on the ARM v6 instruction set and ARM11 (36EJ-S) core. The CPU is cheap and suitable for phones. The following devices are based on the same CPU

1. Samsun Galaxy Gio

2. Samsung Galaxy Ace

3. LG Optimus Net

4. HTC Status

5. Motorola XT531

6. Acer Liquid Express

7. Motorola Domino

8. HTC ChaCha

Features of the CPU

  • Maximum speed of 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 Turbo
Embedded 320MHz DSP (GSM, GPRS/EGPRS Multislot Class 12, EDGE, UMTS Release 6, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps, MBMS baseband)
    400MHz modem processor
    Adreno 200
    OpenGL ES 2.0
    OpenGL ES 1.1
    OpenVG 1.1
    EGL 1.3
    Direct3D Mobile
    SVGT 1.2
    DirectDraw

Rooting the Reliance 3G Tab

I am trying to acquire a Reliance 3G Tab and root it. I know that rooting will void any warranty on the device and the device may not work any more. Since the Reliance device is based on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), the old rooting apps like Z4Root, SuperOneClick, Universal Androot  in all likelihood will not work. I have to ask around and find it, then will write a post on how to root the Reliance Tab.

If you are interested in finding out about the rooting, leave a comment on this page.

  6. Capt. Sarthi Longani says:

okay some info here: the tab’s warranty clearly states that no service will be provided if anything other than reliance is used. anyone can go and check.

still, I yesterday got my mainboard replaced from the service centre. its perfectly under warranty unless zte get to know that you have modded with anything.

the only way of doing that is bricking your tab totally. I did. and got it replaced, because even the service centre people were unable to even make it blink.

rest assured, they wont entertain if you go with an unlocked set on which FTM is still accessible.

stock ROM comes preloaded on the new PCB board. so anyone paying for it will be stupid.

for those who are facing touch issues: I am unable to comprehend, that how can someone using the same hardware and flashing with exactly the same files can have touch not working, while many are.

still, send me a short video. I’ll help to my best.

update: I have the V9C system dump now. very close to porting drivers onto CM7. wait, those who can. because I don’t think wifi is that urgent for someone who uses cellular data.

there’s nothing called ‘half-bricked’. either a set is reparable, or its junk.

for anyone who really wishes to brick his tab, to get the board replaced by ZTE, I’m willing to share the method via email.

Why would any one want to get his tab bricked ?

Like or Dislike this Comment ::==> Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

        • Capt. Sarthi Longani says:

in the case, where someone has got the tab unlocked by whatever method, or rooted it, and now he genuinely needs to go to the service center, for example, getting the battery replaced.

ZTE wont entertain if they get to know that ANYthing has been done to the software.

so, the possible way out is to brick it beyond repair, and place it on their table. they will replace the entire PCB, since there’s no other option.

I’m saying this, because I myself got this done just a day ago.

i hope you got the hint :D still, if you need, i’ll provide the link.

BTW, as it appears, someone managed to ‘leak’ the V9C official ROM. will verify and post once downloaded and tested.

if this is true, I might be able to soon unlock/root it with all components working, and release a proper port.

    • Arpan Deb says:

Wrong. That ROM does not belong to you. Nor is it your intellectual property. You have not contributed anything to it. So you do not have the authority to distribute it by taking money. If some one else is distributing it for free, it is a fair game. More power to them.

As a side note, if you want to make your mark try to leave petty goals behind and give away stuffs for free if they are not costing you money or you can afford it. It goes a long way in building your goodwill, which pays manifold in the long run.

thanks to jimmy for doing this.

btw, ZTE has that snapshot of download center you posted. and they are looking for you now. and by ZTE, I mean china. not local service centres.

will take some time, but I’m on it. unlocking and rooting this rom. got the hang of libraries and firmware components. not really difficult once we have the stock now.

for everyone concerned, after one week of extreme workout, I have managed to Unlock and Root the Stock ROM, with all components working, bootloader unlocked, custom animations, and with a 300MB data partition.

will be uploading within 24 HRS.

Sarthi did you compile the ROM from source or did you use a kitchen. I have noticed one problem with kitchens, they substitute linked files with the actual files which increases the size of ROM by as much 60%. And all the linked files are Linux cmd line utilities.

        • Capt. Sarthi Longani says:

none of them, sir. there’s a third way. most complicated, but the safest :D

I modified the stock. everything in it, from the partition layout to splash screen. did so that even others, who are not familiar with all this stuff, can be benefitted.

at the moment, i have a 160MB ZIP, which looks similar to any stock firmware package, but with almost everything changed except the kernel.

What is this all about? As a beginner I don’t understand big things like you buffs, but one thing I would like to know, are those claiming to have V9c unlocked free authorised by ZTE? If not,how can the warranty be retained? This guy Samrat got payment only after I was satisfied, keeping in mind I run the risk of voiding it.

are those, who unlock V9C by payment, authorized by ZTE?

I would like to know please.

PS: I had a long word with china people. mobile@zte.com.cn. fifteen emails in the dark of the night. they say, as per their contract with Reliance, no warranty is supported if the service center gets to know that the tab is unlocked.

that’s where jugaad comes in. we brick it to such a point where even ZTE cannot determine its been modded with, let alone the poor local service guys.

What China scare. If you have bought a device it is your. period. If I bought a Reliance Tab, it is mine. I will do whatever I want with it, may be put it on an altar and worship it or I will break it into million pieces. Nobody including Reliance, ZTE has any say on it. If you root your tab, you lose warranty , that is it. You change the ROM to a custom one , you lose warranty. Apart from losing warranty nothing else will happen , because it is my money and my device. If you do not steal ROM from the company’s server but make or dump the one from your device and than make a customized ROM out of it, it is not illegal. Millions of people are using it, there are well known custom ROM’s like Cyanogen etc.

I encourage customized ROM development on my blog since it leads to increased tech know how and there are hardly any developers of India developing ROM’s.

    Dear All,

I have noticed that, by asking to some one to help in unlocking the Reliance 3G Tab, he simply demands money. It’s unlikely that no one is going to give the software, means indirectly they are helping Reliance Company. I have finally sold my Tab cuz I could not able to use any other sim and paid almost 5000/- to the company & sold for Rs.6000. Hence, my straight loss is (5000+7000=12000).

But I assure you all that I will give the software as soon as I get with “FREE OF COST”

Regards & bye- till I got the software

Sorry, to keep all of you in suspense, But this was an agreement between myself and Arijit and let Samarat know that he is not the only man on earth to have a solution.
        ***************
Yes…..Yes…..Yes….Eureka, I have very SUCCESSFULLY unlocked my Reliance ZTE V9C with the kind help given by Arijit and with helpful source from Arpan and Sarthi!!!
        ***************
A lot thanks to you all, not because I saved money, but because I got the freedom from Reliance on the our Republic Day! :) Thanks Ari!
        ***************
The Tab works absolutely fine with other sim. I had an issue with my MTNL SIM, as I was not able to make or receive the calls, but it was showing the MTNL network. But I discovered that my SIM card is very very old (2002 I guess!-does not support 3G), hence was not supporting the tab.
@ Arijit–I put a new MTNL sim in the TAB and it worked!. Please add this to your notes and also all of my laymen questions which I asked you. Thanks!
        ***************
@ Arijit—I also discovered that the data/updates which were downloaded directly on the TAB is wiped out. But the data which is copied manualy in the TAB remains intact.
        ***************
Tomorrow, first thing I will have my old SIM replaced with new one and also buy a new one for the TAB.
        ***************
Arijits method is absolutely fullproof if you go step by step. He has also added some more snaps which will add to relieve your worries.

Thanks for all the info above. I have unlocked my new tablet with android 2.3.7 with gsmfinder latest version. Nothing else changed hence no problems only I can use any sim in my reliance tablet. The new tablet is coming preloaded with this rom and the old calculator for unlock code is not working with this rom. The new tablet is easily unlocked with this software which is being provided free by the developer for few activations. Of course one is enough. You Have to select zte v9c and the newer versions. Even detect the port themselves. Although the software did give error for one dll file on my win7 laptop, but this file was easily available on net

      • Thanks Capt., I solved wifi prb using your blog. Now is the problem of my bluetooth keyboard. It no longer pairs as it used to do earlier. After pairing I use Blueinput to connect to the bluetooth keyboard but now pairing itself doesnt happen.
Steps following which I use to get my bluetooth keyboard paired with my tab but they no longer works.
        1) Enter the wireless & networks section of the settings menu on your Android 2.3 device
        2) Make sure Bluetooth is turned on, then enter the Bluetooth settings menu.
        3) Turn on your HID device and enter pairing mode
Your keyboard should show up as its self
        4) Touch and select pair with this device, when prompted enter a pin code (choose your own, I used 1234)
        6) On the your bluetooth keyboard enter the same code followed by the enter key.

I use a portable bluetooth keyboard without which its very difficult to use the tab to respond emails on the go.

        Please help.
