Tech Stuff

I was able to find a lot of chinese tablets that look like Spice Mi-720, but I am not sure as to who the actual manufacturer is.

The CPU that powers Spice MI-720 Android Tablet.

The Spice MI-720 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 SOC chip, code named Snapdragon S1 with a Qualcomm Scorpion core based on the ARM v7 instruction set.  This is a old chip released in 2008. You can overclock to increase the speed of this CPU to 1000 Mhz.

Other features of the CPU

Embedded 600MHz DSP (GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS/WCDMA, HSDPA, HSUPA, MBMS baseband)
Embedded Seventh-generation gpsOne GPS module

  • Adreno 200 GPU
    OpenGL ES 2.0
    OpenGL ES 1.1
    OpenVG 1.1
    EGL 1.3
    Direct3D Mobile
    SVGT 1.2
    DirectDraw

Devices based on this CPU

This CPU is used on a bunch of devices, namely

  • Huawei Ideos Series
    HTC HD7 (Windows 7 Phone)
    Dell Thunder
HTC 7 Pro (Windows 7 Phone)
HTC 7 Surround (Windows 7 Phone)
    Samsung SGH-i917 Focus
    LG C900 Optimus 7Q (Windows 7 Phone)
Dell Venue Pro (Windows 7 Phone)
    Samsung GT-i8700 (Windows 7 Phone)
    Sony Ericsson Xperia X10a
    HP Compaq Airlife Android Netbook

Rooting the Spice MI-720 Android Tablet.

The Spice MI-720 is runs the Android 2.2 Froyo OS, which is pretty straight forward to root. There are lots of rooting apps available for this OS. You can see this Jailbreak Android or How to Root Android 2.2 tutorial . After rooting you can install a custom ROM (not recommended, at least for now), or use various apps that require root access.

This tablet is not locked to any network. I prefer this tablet to the Reliance 3G TAB since this is not locked to a network, you can root it and it costs less. The Android 2.2 and Android 2.3.5 does not make much of a difference for tablet running non-dual core CPU’s.

Custom ROM for Spice MI-720

I developed a custom ROM for the Spice MI-720 (thanks to Yugant Sonawane for providing the rom dump). You can find the rom at http://arpandeb.com/10/2011/tech-guides/spice-mi-720-rooted-custom-rom-firmware-how-to-download-and-install.html

Hi Arpan, have you tried rooting Spice Mi-720 using z4root and is it a temporary root or permanent.

    Thanks,

z4Root can provide both kind of root on the Spice MI 720. Use the latest version. I will suggest you to do a temporary root first. Than get ConnectBOT app and try “su” command. If that command works, which it will, than
you have successfully gained root. Than, restart the tablet and use the z4Root to get permanent root.

Please also inform negative points in Spice tab when compared to Reliance 3G Tab and sensor motion.

The hardware specs of both the tabs are almost similar. But the Reliance 3G Tab runs on Android 2.3.5 and the Spice MI-720 runs on Android 2.2. In my opinion,
on a mid end tablet this is not much of a factor. As for sensors, the Spice has G-sensors, proximity sensors, which is great for playing games. The Reliance Tab lacks in that sector.
Spice Mi-720 is a sensible buy.

I tried playing Ashphlat 3d and the game control felt blocky. I think it is the accelerometer that is helping. However, the ZTE v9 does have G-sensor and Proximity sensor but there is no word about the ZTE V9C (Reliance TAB) having the same. I may be wrong, but my experience while playing was not good. I tested the tablet at a dealer’s. Can you ask the Reliance guys and confirm it, so that I can change the specs I have mentioned,

Yes, the Spice Tablet can be used for official purposes like crediting, editing MS Office documents, read PDF, view powerpoint presentations. You can configure unlimited number of email addresses. The stock email client is good. But if you want more functions, download the K9 Email app from the android market.

after rooting can we install android 3.1 in spice mi 720,please let me now

    • Arpan Deb says:

Installing android 3.1 on an 800 Mhz CPU is not recommended. Also there are not many apps that uses the features available on Android 3.1. Besides, If a custom ROM comes out for the Spice MI-720 , you can install it. But if you have the expertise, the first step is to root the device and dump the existing firmware and than work on it to create a new ROM. You can start by basing it on the Cyanogen Mod.

After you back it up, switch off the tablet, take out the SD card and download the ROM backup to your computer and upload it to mediafire.com or something and give me a link. I will download it and try to make a custom ROM for the device with more enhancement, speed tweaks etc.

    Hi Arpan,
    1. can u put a video review of the tab as there isn’t any available on the internet.

    2. as u mentioned “This is a old chip released in 2008″ for the snapdragon s1 processor, do u think it takes a toll on the tab’s performance (especially since technology in this space is getting sort of obselete every 6 months)

3.Also if u could review the entire low cost (budget) tablets that could also be great.

    appreciate the above review….respect

    4. also which tab would u suggest:
for gps, 3g(inbuilt), gaming (basic or medium), android 2.2 (min)

    Thanks…

    • Arpan Deb says:

      1. I will try put together a video review of the tablet.

      2. The age of the Chip is not much of a factor. The clock speed is important. Having said that, if you are spending money, you deserve the most bang for the buck and a newer CPU is almost always better.

      3. And I will surely try to review all low cost tablets available in India.

      4. If you can stretch your budget to Rs. 26,000 go for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 inches with Froyo, It is a good tab and runs like a dream.

Meanwhile I will keep on looking for more budget tabs.

    Hi Arpan,

Can you please check and tell (better if you can upload a snapshot) how much memory does it show when you check in the following

1] settings -> about phone -> mem info
    2] settings -> storage -> Internal storage

There is a lot of confusion about the RAM, the official specs claim 2GB, but most who have this tab say its much less. can you please help to clarify this. Also there have been news of the tab not being able to install skype from android market. specifically skype for video calling. Can you confirm that it does video calling over 3G or with skype or tango?

    Thanks.

    • Arpan Deb says:

The RAM is only 256 MB. The Internal Flash Storage is 2 GB. I checked it a a Channel Distributor’s office, where I normally check new devices.RAM and Internal flash storage is two different things, Flash storage is used for storing apps and files. It is important to use apps like Apps2SD after rooting the Spice Mi720 tablet so that you can transfer your apps to a microSD card.

Here is a manufacturer of the same TAB

      http://www.aliexpress.com/product-gs/493530343-7-0-capacitive-laptop-mini-size-showchina-hotsell-Qualcomm-7227t-ARM11-AGPS-GPS-support-wholesalers.html

If you check the listing, you will see that Spice has cut down on some of the features. It does not support video calling over Skype or VOIP. But you can do normal 3G calling. But the 256 MB RAM can play spoilsport.

        Hi,

Thanks for the info. I was searching the web and in one of the forums I read that the limitation of how much RAM can be used is forced by google via the kernal coding in the stock ROM of android. Wherein 2.2 allows only 256MB RAM to be used. This is can be changed by someone who know how to play around with the kernal. My concern is whether the physical RAM is also only 256MB or not?? In all probability it may happen that the manufacturer has put in 2GB RAM, however due to the limitation in the kernal of 2.2 it may be using only 256MB. If this is the case then in the future someone may come up with a kernal upgrade which will allow us to use more RAM and solve the issue. However if the physical RAM itself is 256 MB then we have a point of concern. However I doubt that too be the case specially since the manufacturer or seller is putting up on the website that it has 2GB RAM as anyone of the customers can take them to consumer court over miss representation of the facts.

Is there anyway to check the physical RAM??

        Thanks.

Hello, linux is not limited to 256 mb RAM, I have a linux machine with 4 gb RAM. Android does not have any such memory limitation, this was just a rumor spread by a guy in xda forums

Think, Samsung galaxy , Acer Iconia etc has 1 GB RAM. People are confusing the 2gb internal storage space as RAM. If the company is actively spreading such lies, they will be open to consumer lawsuits.

You see, very few people know the differance between “Mb/Gb” and “MB/GB”. The “b” stands for “bit” and “B” stands for “Byte”. Techies like us, who do know, don’t go in deep as no one else uses it. So, 2 Gb memory translates to 256 MB RAM. :)

This marketing guy who thought of this has to be a tecno-marketing dude/duddette. Three chears for him/her.

        This is too much, hehehahahaha.

            Hi Guys,

            Gb = Gigabits
            GB = Gigabytes

            1 BYTE = 8 BITs

            1 GB = 1024 MB

2Gb RAM means 2 Gigabits which equates to 196MB and not 256MB

Hi Arpan, You are right the RAM is 256 MB indeed. I did a mistake in my calculation..
I wanted to buy a tablet within 15K. Which one do you suggest. My primary aim is to be connected to the internet at any point of time so 3G and EDGE/GPRS is must. Also which tablet as per you would give better performance. SPICE or Beetel, considering that SPICE has 256 MB lesser RAM and lesser processor clock speed but has a GPU in return…Thanks

          • Arpan Deb says:

Beetel has a resistive touch screen which will be frustrating to use. I will not suggest that. Spice has a capacitive multi-touch screen. The 256 MB RAM will not be much of an issue, if you will primarily use it to surf the web and check email on the move. But if you intend to play high end 3d games it might be a problem. Also I checked the Spice MI-720 firmware ROM, the DALVIK heap size is 24M for any process, so even if you open, 6 to 8 tabs while browsing it wont give you any problem.

    • Arpan Deb says:

This can happen for any number of reasons.

      1. Low space
      2. Bad wifi connection
      3. Conflict with some app
      4. Other issues.

The only sure fire way is to see the log. Any how try this to solve your problem.

      1. Cancel all downloads.
      2. From Settings , kill all running apps.
      3. Hard Reset your tablet
      4. Take out your MicroSD card (if you have one)
      5. Restart your tablet. , do not put the micro sd card in.
      6. Wait for the tablet to boot up completely and index all media/files/apps etc.
      7. Sign in to Google Talk App (chat)
      8. Wait for few minutes and try sending chat messages to some people
      9. Now open Android market, download any random app with high rating say 4 start or something
      10. In the meantime, do not open browser other apps.

This should work, if it does not, come back and tell me. This is not a common error.

      • Arpan Deb says:

Z4root may not work the first time around. If z4Root keeps on processing. Hard reset your tab and try again. Go for the “Temporary Root” first. It should happen in a minute or two. Now go back to your app pages, you should see superuser app installed. Hard reset the spice tab again. Now, switch it on and start Z4Root and do the permanent root and it will work.

If for some reason it z4Root still does not work. Get GingerBreak Latest edition from http://jailbreakandroid.org/how-to-root-phones-or-tablets-running-android-2-3-gingerbread.html. The app download link is at the bottom.

Great!. Backup your ROM first. Upload it to mediafire.com etc, so that I can download it and start working on a custom ROM that can work on it. I may base it on Cyanogen or MIUI. Right now there are no custom ROM for the SpiceMI-720 tab, or at least I have not found one. If you can upload your ROM backup, I can start and maybe we will get some volunteers also.

It will not go into recovery mode. Do not try to install any ROM as I warned you before. These chinese guys take open source software and than encrypt it, they do not care about rules. I encountered this kind of baseband/rom/board in January. The workaround is pretty complicated. There is no simple way to install custom ROM on such devices. Likely, they are doing booting in multiple stages (preparing a barebones system than loading the actual kernel) etc.

If I get the back up of the partitions / files of the device, I can start creating a new ROM or ask other people to help.

Download http://android.podtwo.com/romdump/romdump_v82b.zip. Your device must be rooted first. If not, download this http://android.podtwo.com/romdump/romdump_v72.zip .
Extract the file (install) from the zip and transfer it to a SDcard and put it into your Spice MI 720. Open ConnectBOT, At the command prompt run “su” and you should get root shell. Than enter the following commands

      cd /sdcard
      cat /sdcard/install > /data/local/install
      chmod 04755 /data/local/install
      cd /data/local

      ls -l

{You should see the file ‘install’ with the following rights -rwsr-x-r-x } , If not , than you may have typed something wrong, do it again.

      ./install

      {It should say romdump installed}

      cd /system/bin
      ./romdump

The program will start and it will back up all your partitions and data in an archive in your sdcard. The process takes more than 15 minutes. Do not interrupt it. Once finished you
will see the shell prompt. Switch off your tab , take out the sd card and upload the archive.

If you use the Romdump v0.82 just copy the file to /system/bin and type ./romdump

    Hi Arpan,
After doing some research on 12K budget Tablet, I found this model (Spice Mi720) to be most feature rich so far. I was about to buy it and then I came up with a comment on its video call capabilities. It appears that although it has a front camera, it doesn’t have video calling capability using Skype. Is it true? How ? If not Skype, can it be used for video call using any other video call site?
    Please inform.
One other thing, is there any other tablet within same price range with all the features it has, such as voice call, Video call, inbuilt 3G modem, dual camera, over 4000mah battery etc.
    Thanks,

If you can live with a locked device , Reliance Tab with 3G bundled for Rs. 12000 for 10 months is better. Will save you enough money on 3G to make up the difference between the Spice Tab and Reliance Tab. Speaking of which neither of them are anything to write home about, but the bundled 3G makes the difference.

  67. vicky says:

Hi i have spice mi-720 (Spice tab) ROOTED

    android version 2.2.2

    kernal version 2.6.32.9-perf

Spice mi-720 doesn’t have hardkeys other than volume +- and power (no camera or home key) home key is feather touch

I have installed rom manager and when i tried to install clockworkmod(CWM) from there

there wasn’t any option to select spice mi-720 but there was one for spice mi700 so i opted that one

rom manager said recovery installed successfully but when i tried to boot into recovery my phone is stuck at android logo

that means even the stock recovery has also corrupted (overwritten)

    i didn’t backed it up(MISTAKEN)

so i googled about it and came to know that custom recovery can be installed from fastboot method

so i installed android sdk + sdk tools inside the application (google usb drivers not yet though, actully they are not installing bcuz my internet connection is slow but i can install them after some effort)

adb interface is working ok i think, to test it i typed following command in command prompt from my laptop

it replied “list of devices attached”
    “Spice Mi-720 Device”

this makes me think i have successfully installed adb interface

now according to this method i should boot my phone in fastboot mode (which is obviously a screen, may with 3 android guys on skateboard as far as i know – from googling)

but my device is always stuck at android logo whenever i try recovery or bootloader mode

sorry i forgot telling that phone is working good anyways

when i boot my phone in bootloader mode then it installs drivers at first instance (Fastboot interface Google USB ID)

then i type following command in command prompt from my laptop to confirm weather fastboot is working

    Fastboot devices

this is what command prompt replies “? Fastboot”

i don’t know if it is working

then next command i give is

    fastboot flash recovery c:\recovery.img

    then command prompt replies following

    sending ‘recovery’ (4182 KB)…

    • Arpan Deb says:

If you want to connect the tab to a computer and use it through adb, you have to enable usb debugging from settings. Almost all tabs I have seen have dual role usb / micro usb ports so both host and otg mode will work.

If usb debugging is disabled and hidden in settings you can still acces and enable it through an app. I have used such apps in the past but can not remember the name.
